For my second BYOP event I had 1 simple rule for myself: stay calm. I could have found something easier to work on, but I really wanted to stick to the theme (“Spooky!”) and this puzzle was just too cute to pass up. As I told the other participants in the online event, there are exactly two colours in this puzzle: white and brown. Under better circumstances, i.e. natural light, I might have been able to distinguish the different shades of brown, but with this being an evening event my lighting was less than ideal and all the brown pieces looked exactly the same. Even shape sorting didn't really help me out and with this puzzle I’ve officially set a new personal record of slowest performance.
That being said, I did respect my one and only rule and managed to stay calm and even enjoy the whole experience. About an hour into the puzzle I also stopped looking at the stopwatch; I knew this was going to take a while and there was no point stressing myself out. At the start, I was able to quickly assemble the little lady in the bottom of the image as she’s quite easy to distinguish, and from there I pulled out all the white pieces to try and assemble the… ghost? monster? I decided to call them Jeff, and Jeff was very difficult to put together. I also had a hard time assembling the border as there were quite a few false-fits and it wasn’t until I had part of the inside completed that I was 100% sure where all the edge pieces went. By the time the 2-hour limit was up I still had about 40 pieces left, but I hit pause on my timer to chat with the other puzzlers, and then finished offline afterwards. The short break was most welcome and I was able to finish the puzzle rather quickly after that. Although I managed to have fun with it, it’ll be a while before I tackle this one again.
